"Who We Are"
Area population decline has leveled off, with slight growth anticipated by the year 2000. The "graying of America" is particularly evident in Mahoning County and Youngstown, with a population base that is aging dramatically. 9 out of 10 African-Americans living in Mahoning County reside within the Youngstown city limits. Mahoning County residents tend to be less educated with a higher rate of unemployment compared with all Ohio residents. 25% of all people and 40% under 18 live below poverty levels in Mahoning County.

The Kick-Off C. William Keck, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of Community Health Sciences, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and past president of the American Public Health Association, was the keynote speaker at our initial meeting.
Dr. Keck stressed that community assessment uses scientific methods to define risks to health, prioritize them, and respond to them. He reminded the audience that community well-being is an integral part of an individual's well-being.
Community Poll A 1996 Canfield Fair survey of 648 adults validated the health priorities by the Commission for Community Health.
