2004 Calendar of Traffic Safety Campaigns

Mahoning Safe Communities also supports the You Drink and Drive. You Lose. Campaign:
http://www.nhtsa.com/people/injury/alcohol/july4planner-03/index.htm. This campaign is an awareness campaign designed to convince audiences that the chance of being caught for impaired driving is too high to risk. The key to deterring impaired driving is highly visible enforcement. Local law enforcement has adopted a zero tolerance policy with respect to impaired drivers. Prevention and not arrest is the goal of the campaign. The campaign is conducted during the winter holidays and also during the 4th of July, these are two times where there is increased drinking and driving taking place.

In Ohio of 2002, there were 440 alcohol-related fatal crashes resulting in 482 alcohol-related deaths. Alcohol-related injury crashes numbered 7,754 resulting in 11,533 injuries. These alcohol-related crashes in Ohio are significant and must continue to be addressed.

To address the problem locally, Mahoning Safe Communities is working with local law enforcement and local bars and taverns. Training on liquor laws is provided to alcohol permit holders and blood alcohol content (BAC) breath testing equipment has been provided to the following police departments:

Canfield, Austintown Township, Springfield Township, New Middletown Village, Poland Township, Smith Township, Mill Creek Metro Parks, Milton Township, and Lowellville Village.
