National Drinking Wat= er Week, May 7 – 13, 2006 is a unique opportunity for both water professionals= and the consumers they serve to join together to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives.  Pro= perly constructed and maintained water wells can provide homeowners with years of quality water and service.

 

”You cannot see= , smell, or taste most water problems so you need to have it tested by a laboratory” says Matthew Stefanak, Mahoning County Health Commissioner.  To promote annu= al bacterial testing of water systems, the Board of Health is offering 20 free bacterial water samples (value $25.00) on a first come, first serve basis t= o Mahoning County Residents who come to the District Board of Health office located at= 50 Westchester Drive, Suite 202 in Austintown Township on Monday, May 8, 2006.=  

 

The District Board of= Health recommends that homeowners maintain records and have a routine annual check= up for:

  • General Water Quality: odor, color= , or cloudiness

 

  • Sanitary Conditions: cracked caps, = gaps, or spacing between the well casing and the soil around it, holes or cr= acks in the casing, location

 

  • Testing: Coliform bacteria, minerals, metals, pest= icides, or chemicals such as nitrate and fluoride

 

  • Mechanical Aspects: flow, water level= s, pressure tank and switch contact

 

  • Recordkeeping: obtain a copy of the well drilling log and create a maintenance, inspection, and testing log
